Today’s Pearl
In this message, Earl shares insights on what drives people into action, and hence, toward self-improvement.
He recalls a man who worked at a company he was surveying. This man won the admiration of his peers and seemed to know everything about his firm, its products and services. He was also mindful to understand everything he could about his customers and their problems.
When Earl asked him about this he said, “When I came with this company a few years back, I decided to shoot for the manager’s job in one of our districts. I’m doing everything I can to be the kind of man who would have that job.”
This man had the source of motivation—he had desire. As Earl puts it, “In his mind, he was already running his own district. The rest of him was merely carrying out the motion that would soon propel him into the job he wanted.”
The PM Takeaway
As property managers, we often fall into the common trap of doing what we think is expected of us. And for many, that’s enough. But for most of us, simply trying to solve today’s problems without projecting forward to imagine how your true potential can be realized is far too limiting. Instead of stepping into the future state of where we can be, we live well within our own competence and limit our contribution.
Have you thought about your next promotion or accolade? Have you considered what you want to be known for? Is it a burning desire that fires you up and gets you to act?
Earl reminds us, “People with unusual drive and energy, people who excel, are the ones who have given themselves a mental picture, a goal to work toward.”
Here’s the gold within this message:
“The amount of drive they possess will always be in exact proportion to the strength of their desire to make that mental picture a reality, to reach that goal.”
5 Minutes to Win It
Maybe it’s a position opening up at your property or a leadership role within your firm. Whatever your burning desire is, summon the strength of your power of vision to see how yourself conducts business.
Take 5 minutes to imagine your next career move. I’m not condoning changing employers. I’m talking about assuming a role where your knowledge and experience can be put to its best use—where your true potential can be achieved.
Like the soon-to-be manager in Earl’s example, determine what it would take to know everything you can about your property, your client, your team, your tenants, your industry, your employer and its services.
Because our tenants are our primary customers on a day-to-day basis, ask yourself what type of person would you have to be to become the person on the white horse who can address their concerns, solve their problems and make things better than they were at the start of the day.
Journal this mental picture so you can describe it to anyone you interact with. Name this mental image so you can summon it without fail. Now, with this mental picture fixed in your mind, act in accordance with it.
Start right now by beginning to do what your future self would do, say what you would say, and begin to assume this future persona. This is your future self—your burning desire. Let it be the source of your energy until you achieve it.
**BONUS**
You can enhance this experience if you follow these steps with your eyes closed. Envision yourself receiving an award or special recognition.
Once you have this clear mental picture, begin to add more colors to it. Brighten the colors. Blow up the size of the picture. Make it in high def. What sounds do you hear? Turn up the volume. Add bass to the sound. Make it a standing ovation and crank up the volume. Shake the hands of those who recognize you. Feel the warmth of their handshake. Magnify your senses to intensify the feelings you get from this.
Play this new recognition video clip when you’re getting ready in the morning. Let it become your theme song for the next week.

Earl’s Pearls
Dubbed the Dean of Personal Development, Earl Nightingale recorded over 7,000 radio programs and 250 audio programs. I’ve listened to hundreds of his recorded Insight messages since the mid-80s.
I’ve gone through his most popular program Lead The Field a dozen times or more. And I’ve given away numerous copies to people I care about as the pearls of wisdom are timeless and priceless.
So I’ve decided to capture these pearls and translate them into every day ‘property manager speak’ so you can apply them in your life immediately. My reference book for this series is his written compendium of life lessons entitled The Essence of Success.
